The Technique of mobile characters

The secrets of craftsmanship

The art of printing by hand with mobile characters, which has all but disappeared everywhere, is making a comeback in the land of the ancient Republic of Venice thanks to Aurelia’s initiative. The printing press has maintained machines from days gone by and the secrets of craftsmanship that have been passed down from father to son in order to create one-of-a-kind handmade works.

This ancient art lives on in the workshop of Asolo thanks to the use of mobile characters in a lead alloy along with ink that has been expertly oxidized to be best suited to the printing process and top quality paper and materials that respect ancient Venetian tradition in every way.

Binding is hand-made with cotton thread. For the cover, natural twine is used. The cover is hand-wrapped in full-grain leather and the ribbed spine is shaped and held without the use of pliers.

Aurelia Edizioni, publisher and artisanal printing press, is headquartered in Asolo, Italy.  It has maintained the secrets of craftsmanship passed down from generations to create one-of-a-kind handmade works printed in a very limited run as per Renaissance-era Venetian printing arts.
